About

Solve for X is a Canada-wide ideation sprint centered around driving positive change for women impacted by COVID-19. It is an opportunity for everyone who wants to help, to contribute towards a better tomorrow.

Now more than ever, economic, health, and financial pressures are disproportionate between genders. According to the World Economic Forum, men and women are impacted differently, during times of crisis. A health emergency like COVID-19 is no exception, as it amplifies existing gender inequalities while adding additional stressors that affect personal health and economic security. Based on UNFPA projections, women face disproportionate impact on their education, health, wellbeing, and finances as a result of COVID-19. The research reveals that women face subsequent obstacles including lack of access to family planning, discrimination, and an increase of domestic abuse, just to name a few.

We are looking for engaged and motivated civic innovators to make a collective effort to present impactful, novel ideas that support women everywhere as they rise to the challenges COVID-19 has added to their lives. Over the course of three days, multidisciplinary participant groups will develop and share solutions. The ideas will be collected and shared with corporate and community partners to encourage championship and adoption of ideas that can drive impact.

This is the first step towards ensuring women are receiving the support they need to master this new normal.

CHALLENGE

How might we support women everywhere as they rise to the challenges presented by COVID-19?

AREAS OF FOCUS

Consider the following focus areas where women are disproportionately more affected

Professional Support

Higher likelihood of low-paying, insecure and informal jobs leading to higher unemployment rates and financial insecurity
Lack of access to paid sick leave
Reduced access to career development & training opportunities
Health and safety risks faced by essential and frontline workers on the job

Personal Support

Additional challenges faced with child and elderly care and planning responsibilities
Increased risk of domestic violence against women and their children
Academic and continuing education demands on themselves and their children
Insufficient access to health and wellness services including sexual and reproductive health services
Lack of access to healthcare services including mental and physical health

Judging

Judging Process

The virtual Expo will mimic a science fair where teams present their solutions simultaneously to a number of judges. All teams will have five minutes to pitch their solution and three minutes for Q&A with the judges. Multiple judges will see each team and evaluate their pitch using set judging criteria.

Judging Criteria

The Solve for X solutions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Impact & Alignment with Challenge (40%): How much support will this solution lend to women as they rise to the challenges of COVID-19 ?
  • Innovation (30%): How unique is the concept of the solution?
  • Feasibility & Path to Implementation (20%): How easily can the solution be implemented? Is the path to implementation clearly outlined?
  • Pitch & Presentation (10%): How well did the presenters provide a convincing argument for their solution?

Top 5 Showcase

The Top 5 teams will be revealed at the closing remarks and will be called up to our virtual stage in front of a live crowd. Finalists' pre-recorded pitches will be presented and celebrated!

  • We want to build a stronger and more resilient community and we strongly believe that the outputs of this idea sprint will be valuable to the public. Our hope is to inspire industry and community stakeholders to continue to build on participants' ideas and bring more awareness specifically to the challenges women face during the COVID-19 pandemic. To aid in this process, all submissions will be compiled in the Solve for X Idea Book – a digital catalog designed to be publicly shared with all who could play a part in bringing participants' ideas to life.
